You know my family is sick when....

Cookies I made in the morning still exist at dinner time.

Menus consist of soup and crackers.

There is washed bedding hanging all over the house to dry (our dryer is out too this week).

Kids haven't insulted each other all day.

I allow a movie to be watched during the day.

The Old Man is Snoring

If when it rains, it pour- then get ready for a blizzard.

That is just how it is feeling tonight.

-Just over a week a go- My little 3 year old girl got pneumonia, ended up in ER with 104.5 temp and wheezing.

+luckily the antibiotics took care of that and she was running around the next day.

-Last month my fridge broke. We were living out of coolers for 3 days.

+but we didn't have to replace it, it just needed a small part to keep it defrosted.

- We lost our PCAs at the end of August, took us all of September to qualify again- under a different program because we now in a different financial bracket.

-My washer broke this week. Claimed it lost communications with it's control computer. That looked like a $400 part to repair it.

+got fixed in just over 30 hours.....it turned out the wires to the control center had their insulation rubbed off by the drum. It is working again!

-My Iphone completely died a week or more ago. I don't need an Iphone. I lived just fine without it. Any plain cell phone would work... but no, it was on a company plan and we had to get approval through the CEO and that was easy, but I didn't realize I would be paying for it. They wouldn't accept my first or last born for payment either. And it just happen to die right after the brand new Iphone 4 made it's debut.

-Our car completely died on us while we were in shopping in Brainerd tonight. Car repairs are never cheap.

+luckily, and many great kudos to my Sister and BIL as they loaned us their van so we could at least take our family home.

Better make sure you have snowboots and hats and mitts out. Umbrellas aren't needed when it's snowing!

New allergies, new fun

I seem to have developed some food allergies recently. Most noticeably to dairy- any and all traces of dairy. So much as a kid who had eaten buttered popcorn to touch my arm will cause a burning rash, and butter powder on chips will cause my lips to burn all day.

Fun..... since dairy parts and proteins are hidden across a wide swath of food products.

I am currently on an elimination diet- to eliminate many potential allergens.... which means I can eat some fruits, veggies and a few weirdish grains. After looking high and low for foods I can eat... home seems to be about the only place they are served. Since I am currently off of wheat, soy, corn, potatoes, tomato, citrus and peanuts, pork, beef, shell fish, mushrooms, peppers and refined sugars of all sorts. Plus dairy.

This diet is to continue for about 2 weeks until my body behaves all happy like- then I can try 1 potential allergen at a time- for about 3 days. If I have no reactions then I can include it in my diet. I have been debating what I want to try first- wheat, corn or soy? Those are definitely the first to try to include again to gain any sort of normal eating patterns.

Why am I doing this?

Well- for about the last month I have endured constant gas- bloating, farting, burping - up to 60 times per hour (or more). And a rash started developing on my upper arms. After doing research on gas and rashes I realized that symptoms I have been having, including constant runs, heartburn and other stuff all seemed to point to hidden food allergies. So I am now teasing out what those are... after I keep a record of everything I eat and how I react... I plan to get allergy tested and see of the 2 correlate at all- but digestive allergies don't always show accurately on typical allergy tests. There are often false negatives and false positives.

Yup,
I have been quiet lately- that is because it is hard enough to talk in between coughing, and even harder to type.

So after hearing the kind of noises upset tummies make- in my chest last night, I decided that it might be time to go and have this crud (Minnesotan word for whatever is going around) checked out. And I officially have reason to feel like I have been run over by a steam roller. This crud, that I normally shake off in an afternoon nap has decided to bite and hang on for dear life.

So even though there is no tests to determine what kind of crud was able to catch me- the swine flu was the suspect upon the Doctor's lips. And the steam roller officially comes in with the secondary infection of pneumonia.

To tell the truth I was fighting something minor and barley worth the bother in October- but by Nov 3nd I was out.... chilled and engeryless. Coughing was established by the 10th. And I progressed to get less feeling ok by the day. Until I gave up and stayed in bed almost all day for the last 4-5 days.

I like to see the glass half full- That being said- here are some advantages to having your whole family down with the flu/cold/crud. It is really quiet economical.

1- Save on heating oil. With 3 of the kids running over 100 degrees there is really not much reason to heat the house- if you're cold go stand by one (that is assuming you are not being snuggled to death by the three already).

2- Save on groceries- yup most of the groceries we bought on Saturday are still sitting here shinny and new- at most we have gone through lots of juice and ramen. And the pan of rice crispie bars lasted a whole 20 hours.

3- No whining or fighting. Yes, we have some fussing but Tylonal cures that.

4 for the first time in their lives the kids understand how to be quiet. I haven't had to tell Galen or Ian to shut up once today- or even to be reverent during prayer time.

But from the activity levels it looks like Clay and Ewan will go back to school tomorrow. They actually have been walking around today and one even asked for some entertainment.

home

There has been lots of songs dedicated to the wonderfulness of coming home. I would be tempted to write one, but now that I am home I have so much else to keep me busy.

Well, we dragged Ian out of the hospital, against his wishes yesterday. He really liked the morphine more then the Tylenol with codeine. But he survived the trip anyways. He is now safely tucked on our couch watching the Land before Time. Earlier he played the computer- that required sitting up and doing something.

Great big slobbery baby kisses to all those who helped my Mom with her surprises for us. It is really nice to have a big working fridge- very nice fridge - and a washer that works. I haven't done a load yet- but will real soon. THank you, thank you , thank you.

Poisoned Apple

What is more effective then the wicked queen's poisoned apple?

An organic apple eaten by a kid who has nothing nothing but Popsicles all week. 2 bites was all it took to send him into a deep sleep. (ok, I know I am giving no credit to the morphine that kicked in... but morphine doesn't figure into fairy tales.)

The took the dressing off him this morning. He has an incision center on his belly and the trap door off to his right.

right now I am waiting on the nurse to come and train us. We are also hoping Ian stops hurting and starts eating. Once we get him moving he will have a fast recovery, but until then life is slow and we wait.

night time update

Ian is asleep. When he wakes he is in pain, but pain meds seem to work their magic. He even watched part of the mysthbusters tonight. If we can get him to eat solids and manage his pain with out IVs then he can go home.

After surgery

Well, it took until almost 11 for Ian to get back to his room- he fussled a little bit and wanted to remain asleep. Then he fussled about his stomach hurting and the nurse gave him some pain meds- he's been asleep ever since. I expect him to be out most of the day. at least i get a real bed tonight- so I should be out tonight.

have a nice chilly fall day.

2 hours later

it took until 7:30 when they finally came and got Ian for surgery. He went into the OR at 8'oclock ish, then at 8:50, we got a call that at 8:40 the doctor actually started on him. So we finished up and had breakfast and came back over. We were still checking in at the desk when the phone call came to have us go down to consult- where the Doc talks to you after surgery.

All went well, and we may be out of here tomorrow. But Ian is still asleep- he slept through his blood draw at 5:25, slept through being wheeled down to surgery, and he didn't wake up until they started to give him the anesthetic. Then he fluttered his eye lashes, realized he didn't know where he was and tried to sit up- 30 seconds later he was asleep again. And he was still sawing logs when the doc talked to us. He will not get back up to his room (and us) until he wakes up. The doc was expecting 10ish... knowing Ian it could be more around noonish. :)

Shannon is being a doll today- I already got lots of pics of her this morning.

The boys are doing well with Grandma and Grandpa. so well in fact that Grandma has decided to keep babysitting rather then come down here and trade Mike positions. I will miss the female conversation- but don't mind my bed mate- all the easier to snuggle. Assuming of course, we ever end up in the same bed at the same time :)

surgery call

It is earlier then the butt crack of dawn- why would the butt crack come first? It is something Amy says... anyways.... and Ian had already been called for surgery. In a few minutes we will have to go down there with him until he gets put under. Then I plan to go get a shower and breakfast.

Mike will have to go back to sleep so he is safe for driving later today.

that is all that I know now except that the beds here are about as good as their pillows.

almost completely, but not totally unlike a pillow

The pillows they have here- probably have no right to bare that name. It is almost completely unlike a pillow. It isn't soft like a pillow, it is only vaguely shaped like a pillow, it doesn't smell like a pillow. It definitively doesn't support like a pillow. In fact the only reason I would even imagine that it is marauding as a pillow is the fact that is comes in a pillow case that match the rest of hospital linens for quality, or lack there of.

The Doc's assistant came in to see how Ian was doing. He is running clear enough right now that surgery is a go at 7ish tomorrow morning. Then he informed us that we will have a clinic office visit on Monday to follow up on the training of the c-costomy... well, there goes my weekend.

tuesday morning update

Good morning everyone. Ian is finally starting to clear his bowels. The nursing staff and on call night doc were starting to get worried. I figured I could have him take a bath... but didn't need to. By the time I arrived this morning his poop was already nice and watery. He, of course is going to keep going on it all day- until he runs clear.

So today is study, read ect... just a waiting day.

to market to market

to buy a fat hog.... or at least get another surgery.

Let's see Ian is being prepped for his tubes and lines, meanwhile he is in the play room waiting for the numbing cream to kick in. Then he gets a tube down his nose (NG) and the go lightly will be dribbled directly into his stomach for the next several days. After that- with in minutes he will get an IV with antibiotics as prep for the bowel surgery. Remind me to feed him lots of live yogurt next week.

Shannon is asleep on Ian's bed. The nurses will be bringing in a crib for her. That will be nice to leave our portacrib at the hotel.

Clay and his kitty are Grandma's side kick the next few days. The boys are off to school, but of course Galen forgot his back pack when he packed for Grandma's.

Amy is hoping to join us here this week and have a new baby of her own, although unless the baby is really sick she and him will be at the other hospital.

That is all I know for now. It is amazing that i have to use words on this blog. I have no easy way to deal with pictures on my portable computer.

Home again, Home Again Jiggity Jog

Well, after a nice little 13 hour trip today, We are home again, with a much longer trip scheduled in our near future.

For those of you unaware our trip today started just about 30 hours from a return home from another little trip.

And our next trip is destined to last 5-7 days.

That means I am now taking bids on my dog, kids and house cleaning. . .

Ian's surgery has been scheduled for next week. They plan to clean out his bowel to a point that it is running clear before they put the c- costomy in. And then he will have a few recovery and watchful days in the hospital before they send him home.

Autism Bites

or at least yells, tantrums and kicks. luckily our biting is very limited around here. But I can't say the same things for tantrums, or meltdowns, as we call them.

We should have taken the early meltdowns, at the end of mini golfing, as a warning. We almost did, but then my sister pulled the "I bought cake for everyone" card and we were forced to play, and our hand looked all right against the bet of Rafferty's pizza, but as soon as it was time to go. Galen folded.

For 20 minutes he screamed and kicked and tried to get out of the car while it was moving. It was so bad that I sat back there with him to keep the damage minimal.

But he was calm by the time we got home and then the real work began. Getting 3 kids ready for school is not the easiest task, and when you add Ian's and Galen's issues on top of that, it becomes a much more time intensive task.

and other notes of this week: We spent our Saturday date night in the ER with Clay. He nearly cut the top of his ring finger off. Expect for the fact that I forgot my purse and cell phone, it was almost like a date. We only had 2 kids with us for a night out. But because I forgot my purse we didn't have means to call anybody or pay for anything that doesn't accept Discover card (the card Mike carries). But we ended up with take home to bake pizza and yet one more medical bill.

our washer is still broken. The part should be on order, but everyone who can install it must be on vacation- I plan to annoy them tomorrow.

Shannon is the light of every group of women. They all love to hold her and watch her smile and wiggle with glee. Someday I will post more picture,.... i just haven't even had time to pick up my office, none the less take picture lately.

I am hoping things calm down a bit when the kids are back in school. TOMORROW!!!!
The sun will come out tomorrow.

Right now everything that needs to be done is labeled "tomorrow." that however, doesn't count my shower and teeth brushing.

Beached Whale

When we were at Sea World,
That big happy looking whale that we got a lot of pictures of, decided he didn't want to cooperate for the fancy show. So they canceled the show, and explained that they use only "positive discipline" on the whales. Which means if they whales are good, they get lots of lovely attention, and when they are not, they are ignored. And considering the whale was just over 2 tons, they had very little choice in the matter.

Some days it feels like Galen is a beached whale. The 100 pounds of him refuses to move, and there is little alternative, but to wait until he is ready.

His autism has really been showing from about Thursday last week on. I guess there was a full moon Friday, and full moons seem to keep him awake all night, which makes it hard for him to get up and cooperate, throw in a holiday schedule, a new bunny for a brother, and some colored candy....sounds like a perfect set up for a very beached whale situation.

I was really hoping they would go back to school today and I could clean this house. But the one who could talk this morning complained of "feeling like he wants to throw up." (and he was the one who didn't even eat all his chocolate bunny).

Well, if anybody so much as peeks their head out of their bedrooms - they will be going to school.

digging out

In case you are not in the know, my household is slowly working on digging itself out from under the flu bug.

Yup Wednesday night. Clay woke up with it. He barfed all over his bed, several towels and Daddy several times.

On Friday I kept Galen and Ewan home, after Galen complained of a tunny ache and Ewan was so disorientated that he couldn't get himself dressed in 30 minutes. By noon they were up and running around, And I had thought that my diagnosis was off. But by 8pm, Ian started in with the barfing and Ewan quickly joined him. Then at 4 am Galen did too.

So by Saturday morning- when most of the barfing had stopped, I wanted to sleep, but all the kids were cuddling in my bed. And because of their illness we had to cancel our date- yup the date we had to put off before due to me being sick in November. It is not like you can blame anybody for not wanting to watch sick kids, or not wanting to catch anything themselves.

And then Saturday night, that blasted flu bug bit me. And I must say. It was quite exquisite pain. Never before had I remembered the feelings of havening nails pounded into my stomach and then being wrench around and twisted. And when it decided you were going to expel, did it pull all your muscles- on your whole body upwards and a tights and un-ended grasp- to a point where you couldn't even breathe. So between those muscle contortions I sat their panting, trying to catch my breath.

Sunday, I was immobile, while the kids were quite mobile. But I still didn't manage to sleep much, as every 2 minutes someone would crawl over me or ask me a questions that I didn't know or care about the answer to. So today- I am trying to catch up on sleep. And feel better and clean up some and all sorts of fun stuff that has to done, but hasn't gotten done in way to long.
