COLD!!

So cold they canceled school. Yup it is only -20 below right now, which is nothing in and of itself. The last few weeks we saw no end of -20, and -30, but the difference is we got a wind. A cold bitter wind with gusts of up to 30mph. That means a sweet little wind chill of about -50, -60. And for those that are unaware, winds chills like that can freeze you skin in 30 seconds flat. It also cuts through your coat, through your windows and into your house.

So I am home with kids today.... battling business and children, but if I need a break from the noise, I can always go freeze my brains out.

Anyways.... time to go make some pancakes. Life is always better with pancakes.

it was one of THOSE morning

You know, the kind of morning where if the Autism movie film crew was here, they would have inserted the whole thing and everybody watching it would get an eye full and feel sorry for you and really think autism is so awful all the time.

But it is not like that all the time. Most of the time he "Wakes", but on mornings like this it is like he doesn't wake, like Galen was hijacked, and you can't get a message through to him, and in consequence he fights everything, getting dressed, eating, going out to the bus.

And in case you haven't seen him lately, he is about 5 feet tall and 100 pounds. How often does daddy have to carry something that size?

About 2-3 times per week it seems. Mornings are tough in general around here, but this morning was worst then most now.

I saw now, because in general he keeps improving. But there are days....

the challange of independace

What happens when mom is day dreaming (ie, looking up baby girl clothes on ebay) and the two year old is hungry?

Smoke happens, acrid smoke happens.

He is a very smart, independent minded kid (like all 2 year olds). And he was going to make himself some ramen. He got the ramen out of the cupboard, opened it, put it in the bowl and put the bowl in the microwave.

He did everything right except for 2 little things:

1. he used a bowl that is not microwave safe.- usually not a big deal- the bowl may crack but we don't have too many other problems with that style of bowl.

2. he forgot to put water in with the ramen.

And hence the black ramen and acrid smoke. OF course, it is -15, and the windchill is -30. Wonderful time to open all windows to try to breathe.

If I “THE MOM”

If I “THE MOM”

Ran for president

About myself: I am a 30 something year old mother of 4 boys plus 1 on the way…

Main tenants of platform:

I would make it illegal to import noisy toys.

Reform the schools- promote zero homework policies, natural foods and lots more gym time.

Tax breaks for minivan drivers.

Health care for all children.

How would you handle congress?

I have lots of experience in handling special needs children.

Foreign Policy:

Play nicely or your friend will have to go home. No hitting, and if you want to play rough, take it outside (the planet).

Environmental policies:

If you break it, you fix it, and if it is not fixable, plan not to break it in the first place.

If you messed it up, you clean it up.

Energy Policies:
The children have more then enough energy, find away to collect it.

Moral issues:

Abortion is not an alternative, it is a cop out. You do it, you take responsibility. Sex ed is no good without marriage support.

On Health Care Reform/obesity problems:

Turn off the TV and go play.

On the Economy:

Hand me downs are just as good, even better, they are already broken in.

more, please!

You know with four cute kids, I can never stop at just 4 pics....
each kid has at least 1 pic of them sleeping (yup I pulled that camera out at 12:10am this morning. Oh well, sometimes it is the only way they will stay still long enough.

new camera

We had to get ourselves a new camera. Our old one gave up the ghost this year. Luckily they are much more affordable then they used to be. I used the camera yesterday to finally get some new items on my website, and now I have some new ones for those who love their genetic descendants.

The best laid plans of mice and women

Yesterday I spent the day making food. Breakfast cookies, omelets, smoothies, lasagna and then cookies again (for breakfast on Sunday). I bathed the kids and made sure to get to bed in time to get 8 hours of sleep before the alarm went off at the pitifully early hours of 6:30am. Yup. you hear me.

6:30 am on a Sunday. So I could get up, showered, dressed, dress all the boys and get us in to the car by 8am so we could make it to church by 9am for the ward conference.

But this morning didn't happen as planned. Clay woke up screaming at 4 am. No matter what we did he screamed straight through until 10:30 and then decided he had enough and went and played.

Meanwhile my ears and pregnant body were trying to recover from the noise and lack of sleep. I didn't move much until noon, and then I moved slowly.

It often amazes me that sometimes the harder I work, the less likely I am to achieve my goal.

what movie charater are you?

I occasionally like to take a few minutes for fun little personality tests that have more bearing on how I am feeling at this moment then who I am in general..... here are my results.

Beat baby Beat!

I got to hear my baby's heart beat this morning. A good steady 143. Being in a well utilized womb, she had a lot of space to squiggle away from us while we were trying to find her. But we did, a little closer to my belly button then I would have previously imagined. - but Like I said- lots of space to squiggle in.

And I am happy with my new toy. For only the cost of 1 OB visit I bought a heartbeat doppler- works via ultrasound. This is the same tool my midwives have used to check heartbeats on my last 3 pregnancies.

Emerging Peopleness

My Galen turns 9 any second now. And it is really fun watching him becoming a real person.

Last night our midnight movie was "The Truman Show", and of course we spent half the time explaining to the children what was happening. Then near the end of the movie he asked if I was his real mom.

I assured him that no one could pay an actor enough to put up with what I have had to put up with with him.

He also made many other really cute statements and questions- but those are harder to remember.

And on Sunday night we actually played several rounds of Uno with 3 of the kids. And Ewan has been enjoying some of the games the adults have played this holiday- like settlers of Cattan.

Overall, as much as I love the cuddly baby phase and the cutest hell-maker on earth phase. I really think this next phase of turning into people holds a lot more fun for me. Discussions, games, theories and many fun stories are starting to emerge.

I think instead of lamenting the fact that my babies are now 9,7,(he will be 8 this year!)and 5, I think I will rejoice in their emerging peopleness and eagerly embrace this new phase (and it is not like we are running out of cuddly babies here).

And that brings me to a similar but different topic of how cute it was to have Clay bowling yesterday. We went bowling for Galen's party yesterday and of course we had a turn for Clay. He loves balls, and loved bowling balls just as much as any other ball. And every time he let the ball go down the alley he danced around for joy and made the cutest sounds- ahh- sometimes it seems almost valuable to have micro cameras everywhere.
